How Lumber Cost Is Calculated
The formula is simple: volume × unit price × quantity. The wrinkle is that "unit price" can be quoted three ways:
Per board foot ($/BF)
Cost = BF_per_board × qty × $/BF. Standard retail hardwood pricing. A 4/4 × 6" × 8' plank at $6.50/BF: 4 BF × $6.50 = $26 per plank.
Per thousand board feet ($/MBF)
Cost = BF_per_board × qty × $/MBF ÷ 1,000. Wholesale and sawmill quotes. $850/MBF for 10 pieces of the same 4×6×8' plank: 4 × 10 × 850 ÷ 1,000 = $34.
Per piece ($/piece)
Cost = qty × $/piece. Common for softwood construction lumber (2×4 studs, deck boards). No BF math needed — but the calculator still shows BF alongside for waste-factor and shipping-weight planning.
Don't Forget the Waste Factor
Real projects lose 10–20% of raw stock to defects, misfits, and cut-off. When budgeting:
- Rough hardwood: add 30% (grade-cutting yields ~70–80% clear).
- S4S hardwood or high-grade select: add 15%.
- Construction softwood (2×): add 10% for cuts, kerf, and end waste.
- Sheet goods (BF-equivalent): add 5–10% depending on layout.
Multiply your calculated need by (1 + waste %) — 100 BF planned × 1.15 = 115 BF to order.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate the cost of lumber?
Total cost = BF × $/BF × quantity. For a 4/4 × 6" × 8' board at $6.50/BF: (1×6×8)÷12 = 4 BF × $6.50 = $26. Add waste factor for real orders.
Do lumber dealers charge for rough or surfaced dimensions?
Rough. Even after S2S/S4S surfacing reduces a 4/4 board to 13/16" or a 2×4 to 1.5×3.5, invoicing uses the pre-surfacing (nominal) dimensions.
What's the difference between $/BF and $/MBF?
Same unit, different scale. $/MBF is a wholesale quote (per thousand BF). Divide by 1,000 to get $/BF. See our MBF calculator.
Should I include tax and delivery?
The calculator gives material cost only. Add sales tax (regional) and delivery separately — heavy hardwood orders often have $50–$300 delivery even locally.
Why is exotic wood so expensive?
Import duties, freight, small-volume grading, and slower growth cycles compound. A $28/BF genuine mahogany plank probably paid its way from Central America across two ocean legs.
Can I use this for construction 2× lumber?
Yes — pick "per piece" as the price unit if the yard quotes $22 per 2×4×8'. The calculator will still show BF equivalent for reference.
